LNG storage tanks are specialized equipment for storing liquefied natural gas. They adopt special materials and structural designs, enabling the safe storage of liquefied natural gas at extremely low temperatures (-162°C). Such tanks usually consist of an inner tank, an outer tank, and an intermediate insulating layer. The inner tank is made of low-temperature-resistant materials, while the outer tank provides structural support and protection.
According to their capacity, LNG storage tanks can be divided into three categories: small (5-50 cubic meters), medium (50-200 cubic meters), and large (over 200 cubic meters). Small tanks are mostly used in gas filling stations or by small industrial users; medium ones are suitable for regional gas supply; and large ones are commonly found in LNG receiving terminals.

High storage efficiency and space-saving
At -162°C, the volume of LNG is only 1/600 that of gaseous natural gas. For the same energy content, the storage space required is much smaller than that of gaseous natural gas storage tanks (such as high-pressure tanks). It is particularly suitable for large-scale centralized storage (e.g., receiving terminals) or scenarios with limited space (e.g., vehicle/ship transportation).
Low loss and strong stability
With efficient thermal insulation technologies (such as vacuum insulation and perlite filling), the daily boil-off gas (BOG) rate can be controlled below 0.05%, which is much lower than the loss rate of traditional high-pressure storage tanks. Moreover, the low-temperature environment inhibits chemical reactions of natural gas, ensuring high component stability during storage.
Comprehensive safety design
Features such as double/multi-layer structures (inner tank for liquid storage, outer tank or concrete shell for leak prevention), interstitial monitoring (real-time leak alarm), and over pressure/ultra-low temperature protection systems (safety valves, vacuum breakers) reduce the risks of leakage and explosion from both physical and control system perspectives.
Environmental protection and energy utilization advantages
Compared with fuel oil storage tanks, LNG combustion produces extremely low levels of pollutants (sulfur, nitrogen oxides). Additionally, boil-off gas (BOG) can be recycled (for power generation, re-liquefaction), reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Cold energy can also be used for industrial refrigeration, air separation, etc., realizing cascaded energy utilization.
Economic adaptability to multiple scenarios
Large-scale storage tanks (e.g., over 200,000 m³) are suitable for long-term storage, mitigating the impact of seasonal/supply-demand fluctuations. Small modular storage tanks (e.g., 50-500 m³) can be flexibly deployed in remote areas or emergency sites, with controllable initial investment and operation and maintenance costs.
Safety Measures for LNG Storage Tanks
Since LNG storage tanks contain low-temperature, flammable, and explosive liquefied natural gas, safety measures are of vital importance. The following are some common safety measures:
Storage tanks must be installed on foundations that meet safety standards, and ensure good ventilation in the surrounding environment.
Regular safety inspections and maintenance should be carried out on storage tanks to ensure they are in good working condition.
Temperature and pressure sensors should be installed inside the storage tanks to monitor their working status in real time. In case of any abnormal conditions, corresponding measures should be taken immediately for handling.
Obvious safety warning signs and fire-fighting facilities should be set up around the storage tanks to respond to possible emergencies.
